eBOOKS

True Grit by Charles Portis (ebook) – How can I begin to tell you how much I love this book? It tells the tale of teenaged Mattie Ross, who’s out for vengeance against the coward who shot her father dead. The book was made into a movie starring John Wayne in the 60s, but to my mind the 2010 remake by the Coen Brothers is supreme. It features Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Hailee Steinfeld. The movie isn’t available for streaming on Hoopla but you can borrow the soundtrack.)

The Homesman by Glendon Swarthout (audiobook) – This well-written Western was made into a movie a few years ago. I didn’t see the movie (repeat after me: the book is almost always better!) but I was blown away by this tragic tale of women on the American frontier.

COMICS and GRAPHIC NOVELS

If you were like me, you probably read comic books when you were growing up, but it’s likely been a long time since you’ve tried one. Hoopla has a fantastic collection of comics (we now call them graphic novels, but that’s just a fancy word for comic book), and a lot of them are Western-themed. You can find a list here. Check a comic book out and see if you like it!
